It’s an unusually warm Saturday night in February in South Oakland, which for local university students means an excuse to get out and party. However, enough people have set aside the usual house parties and shows to congregate at 401 Atwood Street for the first night of Live From Oakland: Genesis, officially selling out the event over a day in advance. Genesis is part two of a series of concerts hosted by local collective Post-Genre, founded by Adam Klenovich, 20, Eli Alfieri, 23, and Mark Riggio, 20.
Within the hour between doors opening at 7 and music starting at 8, the main room of the church fills with a mixture of Post-Genre staff, freelance photographers, students, band members, and local Pittsburgh music enthusiasts. 
The former organ balcony hosts a collaged shrine of sorts to the concept of Genesis, which sits adjacent to an L-shaped merch setup with both the bands’ and Live From Oakland’s shirts. Photographers congregate around the steps, on the balcony, and line the front of the stage crouched amidst fake plants and rugs that contribute to the “bohemian” cultivated vibe. 
“I’ve just been going to shows forever,” an audience member donning a Heading North shirt in the front row says, waiting for the first band to take the stage. “I try to listen to lots of different kinds of music. I’m a little bit older than college age, but a permanent venue in Oakland would be so great for the environment. It would be nice to be able to support something more local instead of big companies.”
Heading North, first band to christen the space, takes the stage with a respect for the historical space combined with an eagerness to rock out and make it a night to remember for the over 200 people crammed into the room. 
Passersby outside onto bustling Atwood Street are mesmerized by the lights shining through the formerly abandoned stained-glass windows of the church and the cheers of the crowd leaking out onto the street. 
	The audience carefully pushes against each other and dances without jumping, to avoid putting any pressure on the old floorboards. There is a collective sense of admiration for what has been born that night. 
	“If Post-Genre opened a permanent music venue in Oakland, we would be at every show,” Heading North drummer Mike Stolarz’s parents say. “We go to all of our son’s shows, and it would be great to have a space to go with good parking– that’s key!” A space that is accessible for people of all ages and walks of life, with different reasons and interests in shows, is universally important to audience members. 
	Clay Coast takes the stage next, romancing the crowd with pop-punk tunes, followed by 9fiftyseven, who close out the night with a set reminiscent of their first show with Live From Oakland back in September. The sound and light quality throughout the night is unprecedented, and maintained by an expansive staff of volunteers throughout the night. 
	“You don’t see a church venue normally in a trashier place like South Oakland,” one of many photographers for the bands says. “It’s so cool that they get to use professional equipment and have an actual space.”
	The temporary church space is incredible, but Post-Genre aims to achieve something more permanent in the future. 
	“It would be so nice to be able to see a lineup ahead of time and be able to plan to go out on the weekends instead of trying to figure out who is playing at what house,” Pitt sophomore says. “I definitely would be going to a lot more shows.” 
“Having a permanent venue would be great for local college bands wanting to get their sea legs, or older bands who don’t have the ‘in’ to house venues or the desire to hang out with a bunch of drunk teenagers,” Giovanni Orisini of Pittsburgh hard-punk band the Inebriators says. “It would be a great space for creatives to meet each other and connect.”
Pitt graduate Jake Kelley of local Saddle-Creek-signed Feeble Little Horse agrees, saying, “It could become a really fucking cool thing, especially if they get good touring bands. As long as there’s good parking. But, Pittsburgh, though.” He laughs.
	The first Live From Oakland: Genesis show definitely hit the mark, and left those who were able to snag tickets with a memorable night and hope for the future of the DIY scene in Pittsburgh. Be sure to stick around to see what they craft up with nights 1 and 2, February 17 and March 1. Post-Genre has begun to carve out their niche in the scene, and the way the next few months play out will solidify their impact on not only local bands, but the entire reputation of Oakland and Pittsburgh music.

Pittsburgh's most enigmatic and eclectic musical collective, "Mr. Dr.," has dropped a scorching new single, "South O," that's setting the Steel City's music scene on fire. This explosive track is destined to become an instant classic, pushing boundaries and defying genres with their unmistakable sound.  Mr. Dr., whose origins remain shrouded in mystery, has long been the subject of speculation and intrigue among music enthusiasts. Rumors have circulated that the band's members are all former rocket scientists turned musical virtuosos, with lead singer "Dr. Mister" often sporting a lab coat and goggles during their performances. This enigmatic aura has only added to their appeal.  "South O" is the latest offering from Mr. Dr., and it's taking Pittsburgh by storm. The track kicks off with a hypnotic blend of electric guitar riffs and ethereal synthesizers, setting the stage for Dr. Mister's unmistakable vocals to take center stage. As the lyrics unravel, listeners are taken on a journey through the streets of Pittsburgh, vividly describing the unique and colorful South Oakland neighborhood (lovingly known as South O) in all its glory.

Asked to define their genre, Funky Lamp usually resorts to "it's complicated." As a melting pot of funk rock, alternative, folk, indie, and punk, "it's complicated" might capture their sound better than any category could. Their contagious stage presence and memorable choruses see crowds dancing--and singing--along at every show.

Pitter Patter is just a bunch of little guys. This indie rock and pop quintet is comprised of Seth Berkin, Brian Ihejurobi, Benji Cohen, Dave Connuck, Lucas DiBlasi, and formerly Alex Fallon and Nina Santucci. 

This collection of pitter pals sing about sad stuff, but their music is hopefully catchy enough that you don’t notice. Pitter Patter is characterized by relatability, high energy, and silliness in their live performances.

Fosh is a band made up of three young brothers, Nico (20 y.o.), Luca (18), and Dante Schwartz (15), with drum help from Stone Magagna, Steve Martin, and George Schwartz. They are from Northeastern Pennsylvania, which has hailed some of emo/alternative rock's most beloved artists, and they have played shows with some NEPA's favorite bands.
      
Fosh is inspired by bands such as Tigers Jaw, Title Fight, Modern Baseball, Turnover, and Oso Oso. Fosh's debut EP "I know you'll make it on your own", recorded at JL Studios, is made up of some of their first songs ever written. They recently released 3 new singles "Phone Screen," "Staring in the Dark," and "Somewhere Tonight" from their upcoming album, "Up With the Sun." They will be releasing one more single before the album which is set to release this fall. 
       
Fosh combines their more unique indie and emo influences with catchy, poppy melodies and hooks to appeal to wide ranging audience. One of the most unique aspects of Fosh is the fact that they are all brothers who all get along and are always rooting for each other. They cannot wait to share the rest of their new music with the world!

Mr.Dr is an Alternative/Indie rock band out of Pittsburgh, PA. All home town natives: Brothers Malcolm(guitar/vocals) and Duncan Rooney(vocals) are backed by Jude Sweeney(Bass) and Isaac Winograd(Drums).

Trip Lotus is a 5 piece indie rock band from Pittsburgh. Led by the creative minds of Frank Mileto; Sean Haberle, Evelyn Wiexel, Ethan Zawacki, and Benito Countouris. 

The band formed in 2021 playing original songs and released their debut album "Pleasantly Disguised" in 2023. Trip Lotus blends various genres of sound and are known for their explosive energy on stage.

Histrionic is a loud band from Pittsburgh comprised of Jude Sweeney on the bass, Isaac Winograd on the drums, and Simon Sweeney on the guitar and vocals.

Wild Blue Yonder is named after the sky’s vastness: an infinite depth of possibilities found in music.  Born in Pittsburgh, PA, the band never plays the same song the same way twice.

Clay Coast is a Pittsburgh-based band specializing in groovy, funky indie jams. They feature Sean Whitney on vocals/guitar, Jason Kuehnle on keys, Ethan Barnard on trumpet, Dom Brazzle on bass, and James Rankin on drums. They released an EP titled “Clocked Out” last year, with more music to come soon. It’s impossible to not be dancing and grooving while listening to Clay Coast.

Formed in the spring of 2022 by Pitt student Andrew Wang (saxophone, vocals), The Southsiders are a six-piece band consisting of Wang alongside his fellow students Ray Calamari (lead vocals)  Eli Mignogna (drums), Sam Burkhimer (guitar) and Caleb Finamore (bass, vocals) as well as Carnegie Mellon student Taha Shaikh (keyboard). 

Fueled by Calimari’s energetic vocals, a trio of proficient soloists in Burkhimer, Wang, and Shaikh, and a rhythm section in Finamore and Mignogna that produces an undeniable groove, 

The Southsiders have developed a sound of their own, blending indie, hip-hop, and funk in a unique way that local band Social Haul could only describe as “unbelievably tight.”

Heading North deliver their own brand of high energy, high emotion, Swag-Pilled Pop Punk to the Pittsburgh music scene. Our sound knows no bounds, incorporating influences from genres as diverse as Indie pop to Metalcore, with a live show that we hope provides listeners with a fun break from reality. With 2 singles currently released and an EP coming in early 2024, Heading North is only just getting started.

Sunny Daze & the Weathermen are a 7-piece rock n' roll band from the rust belt town of Pittsburgh. Coming to fruition in the summer of 2022, Sunny Daze & the Weathermen have been hard at work forming their unique "flower punk" style that takes inspiration from rock n' roll, psych rock, neo-psychedelic, garage, folk, blues, rockabilly, and surf.

Moontown is a dream-rock band making an impression on the Oakland/ Pittsburgh music scene with their own captivating blend of dreamy, psychedelic indie rock, with flashes of heaviness. Combining ambient effects with tight rhythm-section grooves, moontown strives to create an atmosphere that mesmerizes audiences.

Moontown is dedicated to creating a distinct recorded sound, led by in-house producer/ engineer Dom Frankeny (moontown, Heading North, Lysandra, Clay Coast), with six singles currently released on all streaming platforms, and new music coming early 2024.
